Istanbul

In Istanbul with 157 students and such a great staff team – it gets better and better. I hope is being good for the students and certainly many seem hugely stimulated though it is easy to be rose-tinted. Today, by that wonderful tendency of modern networking, we made contact with Orhan Esen, Teresa and I spent some time with him and we are having a talk from him on Tuesday morning – our last day.

How it happened was that we had been in touch for a few days with Gerd Unger somewhere in Germany, via the HICnet (Habitat International Coalition) about urban issues coming up at the ESF. When he heard we were in Istanbul he said “you must meet Orhan Esen” so we did. He’s a kind of self-supporting intellectual outside the university system, the author / editor of several books – one of which I was delighted to see had a paper in it by my two wonderful fomer PhD students Oguz Isik and Melih Pinarcioglu – and he gave us a short seminar on housing in the modern history of Turkey and much related stuff. More may follow. Anyhow we thought it would be very good to have him talk to our students so we have slipped it in…..
